Ongoing consolidation among India’s telecom services providers has analysts worried over growth prospects of telecom tower companies in the country.Telecom tower companies earn revenues from their tenant mobile service providers, and consolidation shrinking the potential client base has raised concerns. Further, networks are integrated after consolidation, leaving several towers unwanted.
“With the Indian telecom space expected to see consolidation and a reduction in the number of players with the new spectrum trading rules, this may not be very Besides, the worry is somewhat offset by the fact that tower firms will see growth from the increasing deployment of 3G and 4G technologies. However, this is likely to be in the form of in-building boosters and additional equipment on existing towers, and not new towers. Not all analysts agree completely.
There is some element of truth to this, but the fact of the matter is that, because of the stringent radiation norms, in our country, as compared to the rest of the world, there is a shortage of towers in many places. We need more towers. Then, there is also the fact that as more bands and new technologies come, more sites will be needed. There are gaps in networks that need to be filled and this will offset the impact of consolidation to some extent.
